Traffic chaos in Ravensburg: 30 zones bring new problems!
Residents of the upper town fear more traffic and pollution in the historic city center as a result of the new 30 km/h speed limit.
Traffic chaos in Ravensburg: 30 zones bring new problems!
A storm of concern is sweeping through the upper city! Since November, a strict speed limit of 30 km/h has been in effect on many main roads, which is also enforced during the day. Georgstrasse, Karlstrasse, Zwergerstrasse, northern Olgastrasse, Ziegelstrasse, Seestrasse, Jahnstrasse, Weißenauer Strasse and Hindenburgstrasse are affected. But instead of providing relief, the Oberstadt agenda group fears an explosive increase in traffic!
“The new 30 zones further encourage shortcut traffic through the upper city,” warns Manfred Lenz, the group’s spokesman. The historic city center, which is already heavily polluted, could degenerate into a transit corridor. This would not only drastically reduce the quality of living, but also increase the health risks caused by noise and exhaust fumes immeasurably. Concern about a “significant surge of additional traffic” is palpable, as more and more pedestrians, cyclists and cars from the new residential areas in the eastern suburbs seek their way through the congested Obertor.
No solutions in sight!
The Ravensburger cycling agenda group has also raised the alarm and is calling for the Obertor to be completely closed to cars in order to defuse the situation. Alternatively, a one-way regulation for Burgstrasse is being considered, which the Oberstadt agenda group has been campaigning for for years. But the city administration remains inactive! Although she is aware of the problem of the increased traffic situation at Obertor, there are currently no concrete solutions. A new overall traffic plan for the old town is not on the agenda, and the passage for cars remains unaffected. Manfred Lenz regrets the city's lack of foresight and points to the Molldiete Tunnel, whose construction is a long way off.
