Dresden starts fiber optic expansion: Fastest Internet for 50,000 households!

By 2027, the city of Dresden plans to build an extensive fiber optic network that will serve 50,000 households and commercial units. The groundbreaking ceremony for this ambitious project was celebrated by Mayor Dirk Hilbert and Frank Brinkmann, CEO of SachsenEnergie, and marks the beginning of construction work in the north of Dresden.

In the first phase of the expansion, around 4,000 addresses in the Hellerau, Klotzsche, Rähnitz and Wilschdorf districts will be connected by the end of 2026, benefiting more than 8,600 households. The overall plan plans to include other districts, such as Mickten, Trachau and Pieschen, by 2027. This development is seen as crucial to the region's digital infrastructure, as high-speed internet connectivity is critical for businesses and residents alike.

Important investments for the future

According to SachsenEnergie, the company is investing over 100 million euros in fiber optic expansion in Dresden. Frank Brinkmann emphasizes that fiber optic technology plays a key role in the state's digital future: "No digital future is possible without fiber optics. We want to let Saxony participate in this digital progress." The efforts are intended not only to ensure access to faster internet connections, but also to contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure. The energy consumption of the new fiber optic network is far below what is required with traditional copper cables.

In addition, the connection is provided free of charge for homeowners as long as a contract is signed before construction begins. This financial relief could motivate potential users to take advantage of the advantages of the fiber optic connection and to actively participate in the digital transformation.

SachsenEnergie sees this project not just as a short-term initiative, but as a long-term investment in the region. Profits from the expansion should flow back into the communities, which is an important concern for urban development. Close collaboration with local partners also ensures an efficient construction process.
