New cycle path on the L 508: Wertheim is becoming more bike-friendly!

In the Main-Tauber region, the expansion of the cycle path network along the L 508 state road has begun. Initial preparatory work has already been carried out, including felling trees on the left side of the state road heading out of town. These measures will create space for a separate cycle path, which will be part of a planned shared walking and cycle path.

The new cycle path will be 2.5 meters wide and ensure a safety distance of 1.75 meters from the road. The project is targeted for completion by the end of 2025, with expected construction costs of around 1.25 million euros. These costs also include engineering services amounting to around 300,000 euros. A section of the cycle path connection between Vockenrot and Nassig is also planned for the project.

Planned infrastructure measures

In addition, cycle path connectors are planned in Reinhardshof and Wartberg. A crossing aid will be set up for cyclists and pedestrians at the Berliner Ring entrance in Wartberg. Two existing crossing aids will also be expanded to increase the safety of traffic crossings. These have an installation area of twelve square meters. A traffic light for crossing is not planned because the traffic volume is within an acceptable range with an average of around 8,260 vehicles per day. With traffic volumes between 5,000 and 15,000 vehicles, only a central island is required as a crossing aid.

The expansion of the cycle paths on state roads 2310 and 508 is part of a cycle traffic analysis study that was carried out in 2020. The aim of this study was to further develop Wertheim into a “bicycle-friendly city” by improving the cycle path infrastructure and increasing the proportion of cyclists in everyday traffic. One attribute of this measure was the proposal by the Wertheim Greens to convert the lane of the L 508 into a “cycle road”, but this was not implemented.

In view of the increasingly changing mobility behavior and the growing trend towards cycling, it is important to rely on sufficient cycling infrastructure. According to a publication on the basics of good cycling infrastructure, the need for new concepts and the expansion of cycle paths is of great importance in order to promote cycling as an alternative method of transport to cars. [Stadtmarketing.eu] reported on six essential aspects that should be incorporated into the planning of cycle paths.
