Ludwigsburg Stadtbahn: Cost-benefit analysis postponed again!

In the Ludwigsburg district, the future of the planned light rail system is becoming a political issue. The decisive cost-benefit analysis was originally supposed to be available by the end of 2024, but now there is the sobering news: completion will be delayed by at least another year. This is reported by the Stuttgart newspaper. The project planners are under immense pressure after the trusted person, Managing Director Frank von Meissner, had to resign from his position under mysterious circumstances. There is great annoyance about this, both among supporters and critics: Ludwigsburg's infrastructure mayor Sebastian Mannl and Klaus Herrmann, the CDU parliamentary group leader, express their dissatisfaction with the uncertainty of the project development.

Critics of the mega-project in particular are using the delay as an argument for their resistance. Voices from the FDP and AfD are now even calling for the city to leave the association. Matthias Knecht, Mayor of Ludwigsburg, classified the delayed analysis as “highly critical”. He calls on politicians to take the current financial burdens into account and to create stable funding frameworks in order not to endanger the implementation of the light rail, as is the case Ludwigsburg district newspaper reported. Knecht emphasizes that despite these challenges, the binding resolutions from 2022 still apply.

Challenges for project planning

The delayed cost-benefit analysis could not only undermine confidence in the project, but also create new opposition to it. Those involved in the project must now work together to dispel the concerns of the critics, while at the same time all outstanding questions about the financing and feasibility of the light rail should be clarified. Michael Ilk, the current interim managing director, emphasizes that careful planning and detailed analysis are crucial for the acceptance of the project. “We have to move forward,” is the urgent wish from politicians.
