Heilbronn opens the iLab: Police test innovations for security!

On Monday, October 14, 2024, the opening of the new innovation laboratory, iLab for short, took place at the Heilbronn police headquarters. Police Vice President Markus Geistler welcomed numerous guests to this important event. The iLab was created to give the Baden-Württemberg police the opportunity to test new products under real conditions and to optimize their suitability for police work. This is a crucial step towards improving the efficiency and effectiveness of police measures.

The new iLab focuses in particular on the area of combating crime and thus expands the existing offer for the police that was set up at the Kehl police station in the Offenburg police headquarters. The Heilbronn police headquarters, the largest of its kind in Baden-Württemberg, offers ideal conditions for the development of innovative solutions thanks to its extensive database and variety of test structures.

Technological advances and challenges

A key feature of the Heilbronn iLab is its close proximity to the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence (IPAI), which aims to establish Europe's largest ecosystem for artificial intelligence. The Baden-Württemberg police have been a member of the IPAI since December 2023, which gives them access to the latest technologies and at the same time makes it easier to identify potential areas of application for artificial intelligence in police work.

During the opening, State Criminal Police Director Sandra Zarges emphasized the opportunities that such innovation projects create for the police. She pointed out that the police are facing new challenges, such as ransomware attacks or data misuse. The focus is now on quickly providing colleagues with innovative solutions and new investigation options in order to cope with increasing demands.

The importance of the innovation laboratories was emphasized in the speeches by Thomas Berger, President of the PTLS Pol, and Chief Criminal Officer Uwe Abendschein, who looks after the iLab in Heilbronn. Both emphasized the importance of developing flexible and timely solutions so that the fight against crime can be made more efficient and human resources conserved.

The iLab will therefore become a central point in the police strategy to meet the challenges of the future. At the end of the event, Markus Geistler thanked everyone involved and expressed his anticipation of the many projects that can be tested in the new innovation laboratory and which will certainly offer considerable added value for successful and sustainable police work.
