E-charging stations in Austria: ZGONC and SMATRICS focus on the future!
On December 23, 2024, the cooperation between SMATRICS EnBW and ZGONC was announced, which includes an ambitious initiative to expand the e-charging infrastructure in Austria. A total of 130 ultra-fast charging points are to be set up at various ZGONC locations by 2026. These high-quality charging points, which offer an output of up to 400 kW, enable electric vehicles to recharge with enough power for a range of up to 400 kilometers in just 15 minutes. This development marks a significant step in the promotion of electromobility and was praised by Thomas Landsbek, CEO of SMATRICS EnBW, as an important contribution to sustainable mobility. Using the charging options, customers can conveniently charge their vehicles while shopping, which underlines the need for e-charging infrastructure in urban areas, as Michael Dockal, Managing Director of ZGONC, also emphasizes.
Innovative partnership for the future
The initiative is supported by the recent acquisition of EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg, which acquired 25.1 percent of SMATRICS through its subsidiary EnBW mobility+ AG & Co. KG. This collaboration aims to develop and establish future-proof e-mobility solutions. SMATRICS, which already operates the largest nationwide fast charging network in Austria, will create 150 additional charging points by the end of the year. Management Hauke Hinrichs explains that the company's strategic direction is now more focused on providing comprehensive solutions for infrastructure, service and IT related to e-mobility. This should not only benefit private customers, but also municipal utilities and companies. The collaboration is considered a “win-win situation” for climate protection and the mobility transition, as VERBUND CEO Michael Strugl notes, and reflects the trend that more and more companies are relying on electric mobility.
The first charging point is currently in operation in Brunn am Gebirge, and the following locations are being gradually expanded in the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria and Carinthia. All charging points are powered by 100 percent green electricity, which not only promotes electromobility but also makes an important contribution to environmental protection.
