Lake Constance district saves millions: recycled paper record in the district office!
The Bodenseekreis District Office in Friedrichshafen has secured a prominent place among the most recycled paper-friendly district administrations in Germany! According to the current Paper Atlas, an annual report that documents paper consumption and recycled paper quotas in German cities and districts, the authority made it to fifth place. Together with four other districts, the Lake Constance district shows how environmentally friendly administration works.
Only Blue Angel paper is used in the in-house print shop, office printers and schools in the Bodenseekreis. This decision led to an impressive saving of over 1.1 million liters of water and more than 267,000 kilowatt hours of electricity last year! Aline Zurell, who is responsible for central paper procurement, emphasizes: "Even though we are digitizing more and more processes, paper continues to be an important work material for us and our customers. We want to work as environmentally and resource-efficiently as possible."
Record participation and environmental awareness
The paper atlas, which has existed since 2008, recorded record participation this year from 244 institutions, including 91 districts. The average recycled paper rate of the participating districts is an impressive 85 percent. The Cochem-Zell district was named “most recycled paper-friendly district” in 2024, thanks to the most resource savings. These numbers show that recycled paper is not just a trend, but a necessity to protect our environment.
The cooperation with the Federal Environment Ministry, the Federal Environment Agency and other important institutions underlines the importance of this initiative. The use of recycled paper is not just a recommendation in the Lake Constance district, but is firmly anchored in administration and schools - around six million A4 sheets were used in 2023. This environmentally conscious decision is a shining example for other districts and shows that sustainable action is not only possible, but also effective.
