Himmelsgarten Family Park: Schwäbisch Gmünd’s green leisure paradise!
In the charming town of Schwäbisch Gmünd in Baden-Württemberg, the traces of the 2014 State Garden Show have left an outstanding impression. The Himmelsgarten family park, which was part of the event at the time, has developed into a popular excursion destination for families. What began as a temporary exhibition has turned into a permanent highlight that has since attracted numerous visitors.
Originally only 750,000 visitors were planned for the garden show, but the number reached an impressive two million. This unexpected popularity has sparked interest in the region's park situation, and the Sky Garden has subsequently developed into a real visitor magnet for locals and tourists alike. The child-friendly offerings in particular ensure that families are happy to stop by again and again.
A variety of attractions for the whole family
A highlight in the family park is the almost 40 meter high observation tower, which is called “Sky Striker”. From up here you can enjoy the view over Schwäbisch Gmünd and the surrounding landscapes. The 20 square meter viewing gallery, which is reached via 209 steps, invites you to look at the surroundings from a different perspective. The staircase is interrupted by niches and resting places, ideal for a short break during the ascent.
Another exciting element in the park is the Walddiscoverersteg, a 470 meter long plank path, carefully designed so as not to damage the surrounding forest. Information stations and play opportunities along the way not only provide knowledge about the local flora and fauna, but also fun for the little ones. The “NATURATUM” adventure forest trail with its 33 stations is particularly popular and encourages children to play and learn.
The XXL forest marble run takes little visitors down into the valley at a rapid pace. Here children can test their skills in a playful way by purchasing balls from slot machines, which make the game even more enjoyable.
A special highlight is the water playground, which offers the perfect place to cool off on hot summer days. Children can have fun in the raft pool or explore the animal enclosures, while a dinosaur garden also encourages a sense of adventure.
A holistic experience
However, the park does not only offer attractions for younger visitors. There are also numerous areas for adults to relax. Charming show and themed gardens are lovingly designed and convey a feeling of peace and closeness to nature. In order to provide visitors with holistic enjoyment, an experience center from the natural cosmetics manufacturer Weleda was even integrated into the park landscape.
Even on cloudy days, the Sky Garden remains a place full of discoveries. When the weather is clear, the view opens up to the Dreikaiserberge mountains - a view that can only be enjoyed from the park's highlights. The facade of the “sky striker” made of larch wood shingles and mirror tiles is not only aesthetically appealing, but also an example of modern wooden architecture.
Schwäbisch Gmünd, as the oldest Staufer town in the southwest, also has a lot more to offer. Historical sights such as St. John's Church and the Five Button Tower attract visitors. The city is also known for its tasty Swabian cuisine, which ranges from traditional dishes to modern burger offerings. In the inviting cafés and restaurants you can enjoy local specialties and enjoy the surroundings to the fullest.
Schwäbisch Gmünd not only attracts families to the Himmelsgarten, but also offers a wide range of leisure activities and historical insights. This makes the city an ideal destination for day trips from the surrounding area or even beyond.
