New traffic lights and road: modernization between Ernsthofen and Loderleiten!
On July 4, 2025, the renovation of the traffic lights and the renewal of the roadway on the L 6248 state road between Ernsthofen and Loderleiten were officially completed. The work was ceremoniously acknowledged by MP Alexander Schnabel, Mayor Karl Huber and DI Franz Stiedl. The bottleneck extends between kilometer 10,810 and kilometer 11,480 and was no longer up to date in terms of traffic safety.
The traffic light system, originally built in 1991, had significant defects, including spalling, cracking and settling. As a result, the old technology no longer met modern traffic requirements. As part of the construction work, the traffic lights were brought up to date with new control cabinets, controls and cabling. It was also planned to replace induction loops in the road and install additional counting loops for vehicle counting.
Construction work and costs
The renovation work was carried out by Gesig GmbH from Vienna and took just two weeks to complete, starting at the beginning of June. In addition, the road between kilometer 10,730 and kilometer 11,020 was milled. The restored surface layer consisted of a six centimeter thick asphalt layer. The company Leyrer & Graf from Gmünd was responsible for this road construction work, which began its work on June 10th and has now successfully completed it.
The total construction costs amounted to around 105,000 euros, which were borne entirely by the state of Lower Austria. These investments are part of a larger trend in road construction that has been observed in Austria and Germany in recent years.
Context to road construction
Similar challenges must be overcome in German road construction, which generated sales of over 13 billion euros in 2023. Although the sector is the most important in civil engineering, it is struggling with a decline of almost two billion euros. Despite these declines, road construction remains essential as it also includes pedestrian and cycle paths as well as parking spaces. Investments in the expansion of federal highways, which amounted to around 8.5 billion euros in 2023, are expected to increase to almost 9.8 billion euros by 2028.
This situation shows that the infrastructure in Germany and Austria needs to be continuously improved in order to meet the growing demands of road users. Road construction is also the most popular training occupation in civil engineering, with around 2,700 trainees in Germany in 2023. Given these numbers, training in road construction remains an important part of ensuring a modern and safe transport network.
