A spectacular blow against organized internet crime was achieved by the Nuremberg criminal police and the Bavarian Cybercrime Central Office. Five Romanian suspects were arrested and are suspected of having gained access to merchant accounts of a large online mail order company via fraudulent phishing emails. The perpetrators caused millions in damage while offering goods such as TVs and game consoles for sale from November 2022 to October 2024 without ever delivering them. Investigations and arrests
The extensive investigations, which have been ongoing since August 2023, led to house searches in 13 properties in Tyrol, Romania and the Regensburg area. With the support of Romanian and Austrian law enforcement authorities, various pieces of evidence were seized, including around 70,000 euros in cash and numerous computers. In another area of fraudulent activity, the suspects attempted to obtain rental deposits through fake real estate advertisements. The arrests and searches represent significant progress in the fight against international organized crime. Cooperation between states and various authorities increases the hope of further uncovering the structures behind these frauds and identifying other accomplices. The investigation is ongoing as detectives are determined to fully investigate the gang structures and put a stop to criminal activity.
