Revolution of Inclusion: Everyone has the right to self-determination!
On December 3, 2024, on the occasion of the International Day of People with Disabilities, Fiona Fiedler, the NEOS spokeswoman for people with disabilities, called for an unequivocal right to a self-determined life for everyone. “It shouldn’t depend on where someone lives or what financial resources are available as to whether the necessary support is provided,” she emphasized. NEOS sees an urgent need for action regarding the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which Austria ratified over a decade ago. As www.ots.at reported, there are still significant gaps that need to be closed in order to enable people with disabilities to fully participate in all areas of life.
A particular focus is on inclusive education. “We need an education system that finally thinks about all children,” says Fiedler, who states that inclusive education can no longer be hindered by insufficient resources and bureaucratic hurdles. Every person should have the opportunity to receive the support they need to lead a fulfilling life, regardless of the type of disability. This is a central demand that has already been discussed on www.neos.eu. Whether due to an accident or illness, the challenges that come with a disability should not stop anyone from being able to participate actively and independently in life.
Important demands for inclusion
“We want real equality and the freedom to shape your own life according to your personal ideas,” said Fiedler, summarizing the concerns. It is up to society to create the framework conditions that enable people with disabilities to return to independence. In this respect, inclusion is not just a right, but a task for society as a whole that affects everyone. Increased support in the form of personal assistance is a crucial step towards true participation and equality. The NEOS are therefore pushing for a nationwide uniform regulation that ensures that everyone receives the necessary help.
