Artificial intelligence: GPT-4 convinces better than humans in debates!
A recent study has shown that the AI model GPT-4 is above average convincing in online debates. According to researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), GPT-4 was found to argue more successfully than human participants 64.4 percent of the time when it had access to personalized data such as age, education level or political views. This enables the AI to specifically adapt its reasoning and thus increase its persuasive power. However, without such information, the effectiveness of the AI was comparable to that of human discussion partners. These results were published in the renowned journal “Nature Human Behavior” Bluewin.
The study included around 900 participants who engaged in structured online debates on various socio-political issues such as fossil fuel bans and the impact of social media on intelligence. Research team leader Francesco Salvi emphasizes the importance of personalized arguments and calls on online platforms and social media to take the risks posed by AI-driven persuasion strategies seriously and take appropriate measures to contain them. This is particularly relevant since the results are not related to a controversial study from the University of Zurich that caused an uproar in the Reddit community Krone.
Artificial intelligence and its impact on social media
Artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed the way we interact and consume content online. AI applications are not only found in art and text generation, but also influence how social media is operated. Content personalization is a huge benefit as it provides users with relevant information and increases efficiency. For example, platforms such as Twitter and Instagram use AI tools for content moderation and targeted advertising [Computer Weekly].
Using AI in social media brings not only benefits but also risks. The possibility of bias in decisions, the risk of creating echo chambers and inadequate moderation of content are critical points to consider. In addition, active data collection about users is often considered problematic. Clear measures and responsible use of AI in these platforms are therefore urgently needed to maintain the integrity of online discussions.
