Mexico protects textile industry: High tariffs on Chinese imports!
Mexico has taken dramatic steps to protect its domestic textile industry from the growing threat of illegal imports from abroad. A new decree signed by President Claudia Sheinbaum will introduce import tariffs of up to 35 percent on textile goods from countries such as China. Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced that this measure will apply until April 2026 and will affect more than 150 types of goods imported from countries with which Mexico does not have a free trade agreement. Meanwhile, the import of certain textile products is to be banned entirely in order to ensure the competitiveness of Mexican companies and protect the jobs of around 400,000 employees. According to Ebrard, this is a response to declining employment in the industry, where over 79,000 jobs have been lost in recent years, as well as from oe24 reported.
Impact of US dro threatening
Mexico's decision comes at a turbulent time, particularly given U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's threats to impose high import tariffs on all goods from Mexico and Canada, as well as additional tariffs on products from China. Trump has claimed that goods from China are entering the U.S. illegally through Mexico. The development could further strain trade relations between the three nations bound under the North American Free Trade Agreement (USMCA). According to Ebrard, it is of utmost importance to close the doors to illegal imports and protect the domestic economy, such as Investment Week notes.
