Wismar on the upswing: TKMS invests millions in submarine production!

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) is preparing for the future of submarine production and is planning a comprehensive modernization of the shipyard in Wismar. Driven by an order worth billions from Germany and Norway, a mid-three-digit million amount is being invested to significantly expand production capacities. This decision is part of a larger strategy to ensure more efficient manufacturing and compliance with strict deadlines for the reorganization of submarine production, such as IT BOLTWISE reported.

After the approval of the Bundestag's budget committee and the official conclusion of a contract between the Bundeswehr and TKMS for the construction of six submarines of the latest 212CD class, the armaments giant also called IG Metall onto the scene. The union is demanding quick clarity about the promised jobs in Wismar, where TKMS expects up to 1,500 new jobs, but the creation of these jobs will be spread over several years. The first hires are not expected until work is completed on a major cruise ship for Disney, like NDR reports.

Early start of production and extensive plans

The investment in Wismar is intended not only to boost submarine production, but also to expand the shipyard's future capacity so that other ships, such as frigates, can also be realized. Production of the first submarines of the new class is already underway within the specified time frame. TKMS sees the shipyard in Wismar as a central location for the production of submarines and plans to begin extensive construction work as early as 2025, while possible production of the research vessel Polarstern 2 is being considered.

The decision to modernize the Wismar shipyard highlights TKMS' strategy to strengthen the maritime defense industry. Given increasing international demand, the future of the company and its employees in the region remains extremely promising from an economic perspective.
