Wind power dispute in Upper Austria: MFG stops wind turbines around Sandl!

On December 21, 2024, the MFG-OÖ (People for the Good Life in Upper Austria) announced the decision that the areas around Sandl and the Saurüssel would be classified as a “red zone”. This means that these regions remain wind turbine-free, which LAbg. Manuel Krautgartner described as a small Christmas miracle. The MFG has vehemently spoken out against the construction of wind turbines in Upper Austria, as it considers the destruction of nature and the associated negative effects on the local environment to be significant. Krautgartner criticized the federal government and called for clear and environmentally friendly planning of energy projects, as there are hardly any suitable areas for wind power in Upper Austria, according to the Upper Austrian environmental lawyer Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Martin Donat.

Criticism of the use of wind power

The MFG sees the debate about wind power as misguided and insists on protecting natural habitats. There is great concern about the planned destruction of large areas of forest and the MFG is therefore calling for a comprehensive reassessment of all wind power projects in the light of environmental protection and rising energy costs. “We are the only party that sticks to its clear line,” explained Krautgartner. The challenge is to reconcile the EU requirements for preserving nature with the need for the energy transition. In this context, it was pointed out that areas for wind turbines must be subject to strict legal requirements, such as: EnBW emphasizes that they examine both aspects of emission control law and the suitability of the areas.

The decision to declare Sandl and the Saurüssel a taboo area for wind power represents a significant step in the effort to protect the environment in Upper Austria. The MFG sees itself and the local population strengthened in its concerns and hopes that this success serves as an example for more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy decisions.
