Congestion chaos threatens: A10 tunnel construction is delayed until June 26th!
The A10 between Golling andwerfen is currently affected by a tunnel construction project that will last until June 26, 2025. The delay is causing dissatisfaction in the neighboring communities. However, ASFINAG is sticking to the completion date, despite outstanding work on portals, guardrails, asphalting and permits that have not yet been issued. In the past there have been kilometer-long traffic jams, sometimes up to 50 kilometers long, and overloaded alternative routes.
Project manager Hanspeter Treichl announced that an earlier release of the tunnel was not possible. The Corpus Christi weekend will be particularly critical, as around 20 kilometers of traffic jams are expected towards the south. Dismantling work will take place in sections over ten nights, although the traffic situation will not finally be relieved until after June 26th.
Traffic congestion and alternative routes
The upcoming travel times during the holiday season could be a test of patience for many drivers. To accommodate residents and commuters, it is recommended that alternative routes be planned. When the construction site is in operation regularly, tunnel construction always has an impact on traffic flow, which is also the case in other regions.
In Germany, intensive work is currently being done on various tunnel construction projects. According to a survey by STUVA, over 84 kilometers of traffic tunnels will be under construction in 2023/24. This construction activity distribution shows that long-distance rail tunnels and road tunnels have increased compared to the previous year. The road construction volume currently covers almost 34 kilometers, 60% of which is being built using the closed construction method.
More and more cities are relying on modern tunnel projects to relieve urban traffic and improve infrastructure. Munich leads the way with around 22 kilometers of construction volume, followed by Hamburg and Nuremberg. Such measures are also urgently needed in Salzburg in order to solve the traffic problem sustainably. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how the situation on the A10 will develop, especially with the Corpus Christi weekend approaching.
