New shopping paradise in Gemuenden: Lidl and dm are opening soon!
On Wednesday afternoon there was a lot of activity in the parking lot of the Weimann beverage store on Gemündener Ladestrasse. Customers took the opportunity to drop off packages, purchase drinks, purchase gardening supplies and collect fresh apples. Meanwhile, two large excavators have been busy demolishing the silo tower since Christmas, part of a wider project to build two new supermarkets.
The new stores, a Lidl and a dm, will occupy a total area of 3,228 square meters. The Weimann beverage store plans to move in March and then be demolished. The new building for the beverage market is already being built 100 meters down the street, and the interior work is currently in full swing. The outdoor facilities and a new parking lot are still in the planning phase and the work has already been awarded.
Delay and future developments
Wolfgang Rosentritt, managing director of Rosbo GmbH, has scheduled demolition work on the existing beverage store for February/March. The new stores are now scheduled to open at the beginning of 2026. An opening was originally planned for 2025, but approval-related reasons led to delays. After demolishing the silo tower, the excavators will fill the area with earth and stone material, increasing the ground height by half a meter to three-quarters of a meter. During the course of the year, the reconstruction of the adjacent street intersection with the installation of a traffic light system is also planned, the costs of which will be borne by Rosbo GmbH.
Environmental awareness also plays a role in the new project: the new shopping centers are to be equipped with photovoltaic systems and landscaped. There are also plans to plant numerous trees in the parking lot between Lidl and dm. A restaurant in the listed freight station is also being considered as part of the overall project Mainpost reported.
At the same time, construction work is progressing on a Lidl and dm branch in Heidenau, where the opening of the dm market is planned for May 2025. A Lidl sign can be seen at the construction site that proclaims: “We’re dressing up for you.” However, the construction causes confusion because Lidl is the building owner, even though a dm drugstore is being built. Construction work is clearly visible and construction materials and vehicles are present daily. Since the beverage market is also being renovated and expanded, the number of parking spaces will be temporarily reduced. However, Lidl plans to maintain the current total number of 120 parking spaces Sächsische.de reported.
