Gebrüder Weiss: Surge in sales through digitalization and climate protection!
Logistics giant Gebrüder Weiss has had a successful financial year in 2024, although the challenges are numerous. Sales in the Air & Sea division rose by an impressive 21 percent to 939 million euros, primarily thanks to the expansion of the network in the USA and Germany as well as the high transport volumes in trans-Pacific trade. This era also brought increasing rates of sea freight exports from China to Europe. Due to attacks in the Red Sea, container ships took the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope, which led to adjustments in delivery traffic, such as vorarlberg.orf.at reported.
In the land transport and logistics division, sales of 1.52 billion euros were confirmed, which corresponds to an increase of five percent. The parcel service DPD Austria, in which Gebrüder Weiss is involved, moved over 63 million parcels in 2024. According to managing director Wolfram Senger-Weiss, the growth is primarily due to exports and private customers. In order to meet the increasing demands, the company invested a total of 124 million euros in the expansion and modernization of its infrastructure in 2024. This includes the construction of a modern logistics and IT center in Wolfurt, supplemented by further expansions at various locations, such as transport-online.de holds on.
Sustainability and challenges
As part of its climate optimization strategy, Gebrüder Weiss relies on e-mobility and renewable energies. With its 34 photovoltaic systems, the company generated around 13,000 megawatt hours of electricity in 2024, which corresponds to around half of the total electricity requirements of all locations. Wolfram Senger-Weiss emphasizes that despite the positive business figures, the ongoing economic weakness in Europe, rising tariffs and the challenges in the automotive industry are making the competitive situation more intense. The company therefore plans to continue to position itself as technology-open and solution-oriented in order to meet the needs of its customers.
