The world's highest bridge opens in China this summer

The world awaits a new engineering feat: China's highest bridge, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, will open in June. This impressive structure is located in Guizhou Province in southwest China and will set new standards with a height of 625 meters above the river.

An impressive height

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge surpasses the previous record holder, the Millau Viaduct in France, by 288 meters. This bridge connects regions in Guizhou known for their complex mountain landscapes and dramatic gorges.

Improving infrastructure

China's government has launched a national plan to improve infrastructure, particularly in underdeveloped mountainous regions such as Guizhou. The construction of this bridge is not only a record-breaking project, but is also expected to significantly increase mobility in the region. According to state media, travel time via the Huajiang Grand Canyon will be reduced from two hours to just one minute.

Construction of the bridge

The bridge is a steel girder suspension bridge with a total length of 2,892 meters. Construction officially began on January 18, 2022 and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2025, local state media reported. The entire steel structure weighs about 22,000 tons, which is equivalent to the weight of three Eiffel Towers.

A remarkable project

"The bridge's progress has currently reached 95%, and we plan to open it in the second half of 2025," Zhang Shenglin, chief engineer of Guizhou Highway Group, told the state-funded China Daily newspaper. He added: "This superstructure spanning the 'cleft of the Earth' will create a global, two-way innovation and a new landmark project that demonstrates the strength of China's infrastructure."

Bridge wealth in Guizhou

Currently, almost half of the world's 100 tallest bridges are located in Guizhou, making the region an important location for impressive engineering structures.
