Christmas with the museum train: Santa Claus is coming to Geesthacht!
On December 21st and 22nd, 2024, the museum railway of the Geesthachter Eisenbahn Association will traditionally start running between Bergedorf Süd and Geesthacht, in keeping with the Advent season. On these special trips, Santa Claus will be on board and reward the children for reciting poems or songs, such as lok-report.de reported. The departure times are fixed: In Geesthacht the trains leave at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., while the trains in Bergedorf Süd start at the same times. Ticket prices from Geesthacht to Bergedorf are €5.00, and children between 4 and 14 years pay half price.
Public transport connections and history
The railway line, which is now used as part of the museum's operations, has a long history. The route between Bergedorf and Geesthacht was originally opened on December 20, 1906 and has since played an important role in traffic between Hamburg's districts. Loud Wikipedia took them through several stations such as Escheburg and Börnsen and was also known for the transport of goods, including materials essential to the war effort. The Bergedorf-Geesthachter Eisenbahn AG stopped regular passenger services in 1953, but since 1976 the line has been used for nostalgic steam trains, keeping the historical heritage of this railway alive.
The future reactivation of the route for passenger traffic is already being discussed. Political support and funding plans are underway, with the prospect of a direct connection to the Nettelnburg S-Bahn station. These developments could improve connections between Geesthacht and Hamburg in the coming years and revive the old connection from the first half of the 20th century.
