Traffic chaos before Christmas: This is what it will be like on the roads of northern Germany!

On Sunday, December 23, 2024, travelers in northern Germany must expect high traffic volumes. Deutsche Bahn expects a massive increase in passengers by January 2nd, with up to 450,000 travelers per day. To cope with this rush, the largest ICE fleet ever with 410 trains is being used to avoid overcrowded trains NDR reported. The connections between Hamburg and Bremen are particularly popular, where traffic jams from construction sites are also to be expected. Drivers should be patient as there is occasionally traffic congestion on the motorways, including the A1 and A2.

Problems in rail transport

But it's not just the roads that are polluted. The passenger association “Pro Bahn” criticizes the current closure of the intercity connection 55, which normally connects Dresden with important cities such as Leipzig and Hanover. This closure, caused by an accident at a railway crossing, has a serious impact on travelers, especially with regard to the upcoming Christmas traffic. How MDR reported, the connection is particularly problematic for the Dresden-Leipzig route, as there are only two hour gaps between trains anyway. According to Lukas Iffländer from “Pro Bahn”, restoring the connection is urgently needed in order not to put additional strain on travelers during the busy holidays.
