Shocking accident in the Zillertal: car flips onto the roof after a crash!
On January 5, 2025, around 5:30 p.m., a serious traffic accident occurred on the Zillertal federal highway. A 47-year-old Austrian lost control while driving from the Horbergbahn towards Zillertal and crossed into the oncoming lane. There was a head-on collision with an oncoming car driven by a 53-year-old man. Due to the force of the impact, the vehicle that caused the accident was thrown into the air and ended up on its roof, about 100 meters away from the collision. All three passengers - the two drivers and the 47-year-old's 55-year-old passenger - suffered injuries of an undetermined degree and were taken to Schwaz Hospital after receiving initial treatment on site. An alcohol test carried out on the 47-year-old gave a positive result, which further dramatizes the circumstances of the accident.
Zillertal and transport connections
The Zillertal region, known for its breathtaking mountain landscapes and winter sports opportunities, can be reached via various routes. According to the Mayrhofen website, visitors can arrive by car via the A12 to the Zillertal exit or by train via Jenbach train station. If you want to travel by air, the nearest airports are in Innsbruck, Munich and Salzburg. A particularly practical note for drivers: There are free parking spaces available at the Horbergbahn, while there are no parking options at other railways such as the Penkenbahn. This is intended to help reduce traffic and relieve pressure on residents, thereby enabling a traffic-friendly journey. The Ahornbahn and Penkenbahn also offer barrier-free access for wheelchair users, which makes exploring the region easier and gives guests an unforgettable winter day.
However, the tragic events of the accident cast a shadow over the otherwise popular ski region. It remains to be seen whether the accident will impact travel or safety policies in the area. However, the mountain railways themselves continue to provide effective transport to the winter sports areas, taking visitors safely and comfortably to the most beautiful viewpoints and slopes.
