S-Bahn chaos in Hamburg: Experts warn that the new S4 is overloaded!
Alarm mood in Hamburg! The new S4, which is scheduled to run from Altona via the main train station to Bad Oldesloe from 2029, could drive S-Bahn users in the Hanseatic city to despair. Experts from the Technical University of Braunschweig warn of the threat of overload on a critical section between Ahrensburg-Gartenholz and Bad Oldesloe. Construction work is already underway, but the planned additional tracks don't seem to be enough!
Chaos on the tracks: S-Bahn on hold
On this section, the new S-Bahn will run on the existing tracks of the Hamburg-Lübeck railway, together with regional trains. But that's not all: around 100 additional ICE and freight trains from Scandinavia are expected every day, which have priority - even in the event of delays! This means: delays for the S-Bahn and impending chaos in the entire Hamburg S-Bahn network!
Experts are calling for immediate action
The experts agree: Without an additional track for the S-Bahn, it won't work! But Deutsche Bahn waves it off and claims that the existing tracks are sufficient. A spokesman refers to a study from 2017 that certifies reserve capacity on the route. The Hamburg transport authority and the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Transport support this assessment and see no reason for concern. But the question remains: Who will absorb the delays if the S-Bahn stalls on the route?
