Black ice alarm in East Hesse: Danger to life from snow and ice!
The residents of East Hesse have to prepare for difficult weather conditions on Sunday. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued comprehensive warnings about slippery conditions and snowfall that apply to the entire Fulda district, the eastern Vogelsberg district and the southern Hersfeld-Rotenburg district. Updates as of 10:14 a.m. Jan. 5 show the danger level has been increased to level 3 out of 4, meaning a high risk of slippery conditions.
The DWD warning points out potential dangers to life and limb from freezing wet conditions or freezing rain. Drivers are advised to exercise caution as slippery road conditions are expected.
Weather forecast and recommendations
Snowfall and slippery conditions are expected in East Hesse on Sunday. The DWD predicts new snow amounts of 5 to 10 cm at higher altitudes, while up to 4 cm of snow can fall in lowlands and up to 8 cm in stagnant areas.
The warning also affects other parts of Hesse where there is a significant risk of slippery roads (level 2 of 4). Drivers should plan for delays and avoid unnecessary trips to minimize potential risks.
In addition, the DWD recommends avoiding spending time outdoors and traveling if possible. Blankets and warm drinks should be carried in case of need. It is also advised to pay attention to possible disruptions and road closures. The situation is exacerbated by a warm front that brings precipitation and can turn rain into ice in areas with cold ground, such as osthessen-news.de reported.
Around 100 flights have already been canceled at Frankfurt Airport, and Deutsche Bahn is reporting long delays in long-distance traffic. Residents of East Hesse are urged to prepare for harsh weather conditions and act accordingly to ensure their safety.
