MGI Tech receives Green World Award for mangrove protection in Thailand!
MGI Tech Co., Ltd. received the prestigious “Green World Champion” Award in the “Environmental Improvement: Conservation & Wildlife Projects” category on July 15, 2025. This award recognizes the company's sustainable initiatives aimed at protecting mangroves in Thailand. MGI uses innovative genomics technologies to capture the genetic diversity of mangrove species and develop effective conservation strategies that are urgently needed given the environmental challenges facing mangrove ecosystems, including rising sea levels and habitat loss. The company works in close collaboration with the Thai National Omics Center.
The importance of mangroves in Thailand cannot be overstated. These coastal habitats not only provide coastal protection against erosion and storm damage, they are also essential habitats for diverse animal species and support the local fishing industry. Mangrove ecosystems cover around 137,000 square kilometers worldwide and are also crucial for climate protection due to their ability to store carbon. They store up to five times more carbon per unit area than tropical rainforests and thus help reduce greenhouse gases, making them an indispensable resource in the fight against climate change.
Importance of genomics in conservation strategies
MGI's DNBSEQ™ technology plays a central role in research into mangrove genetic diversity. To date, the company has mapped the genetic diversity of 15 mangrove species in Thailand and established a reference genome database. Genetic data is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies, as numerous studies show. For example, Carrasquilla-Henao and Juanes (2017) demonstrated that mangroves increase local fishing catches, while del Valle et al. (2020) showed that mangroves provide coastal protection, especially during storms.
Duncan Yu, President of MGI, expressed gratitude for the award and emphasized the company's commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. MGI was selected from over 500 applicants, underscoring the importance of this award. The Green World Awards, launched in 1994, are among the most prestigious environmental awards worldwide and are presented by The Green Organization.
Threats to mangrove ecosystems
Despite their importance, mangrove ecosystems are increasingly exposed to environmental problems. Factors such as urbanization, pollution and climate change affect their stability and health. Sustainable protection of these ecosystems requires international initiatives as well as national and regional strategies for rehabilitation and reforestation. Mangrove forests offer protection against erosion, filter suspended solids and nutrients, which increase water quality and create habitat for many animal species.
In summary, conserving mangroves in Thailand has not only high ecological but also economic value. They are fundamental to local fisheries, support timber harvesting and promote ecotourism. The price of MGI Tech Co., Ltd. is an important step towards more effective environmental protection and increases awareness of the challenges facing mangrove ecosystems worldwide.
