Unemployment in Carinthia: Young people affected, seniors stable!
In February 2025, the situation on the labor market in Carinthia was tense: 26,016 people were unemployed or in training, which represents an increase of 3.5 percent compared to the previous year. This value is below the Austrian average of 6.9 percent. While long-term unemployment was reduced by 1.1 percent, the situation among those over 50 has hardly changed, with a slight increase of 0.5 percent. Particularly alarming is the 11 percent increase in youth unemployment, which also corresponds to the Austria-wide trend of 10.9 percent krone.at reported.
Regional differences and industry developments
Despite a moderate increase, there are major regional differences: unemployment fell in Spittal an der Drau (-2.6 percent) and Hermagor (-1.9 percent), while other districts are affected by rising numbers. Developments are also inconsistent in the various sectors. Although there are fewer unemployed people in the construction and wood sectors as well as in unskilled occupations, there was a decrease of 184 job vacancies in technology and even 145 fewer offers in tourism. In the healthcare sector and construction, however, there was an increase in demand for workers klick-kaernten.at reported.
This mixed outcome highlights the challenges that the labor market in Carinthia has to overcome and emphasizes the need for targeted programs to support young people and other affected groups.
