Unemployment in Carinthia: young people affected, seniors stable!

In February 2025, the situation on the labor market in Carinthia was tense: 26,016 people were unemployed or in training courses, which represents an increase of 3.5 percent compared to the previous year. This value is below the Austrian average of 6.9 percent. While long-term unemployment could be reduced by 1.1 percent, the situation with the over 50s has hardly changed, with a slight increase in 0.5 percent. The increase of 11 percent in youth unemployment, which also corresponds to the Austria -wide trend of 10.9 percent, is particularly alarming, as krone.at reported.

regional differences and industry developments

Despite a moderate increase, there are great regional differences: in Spittal an der Drau (-2.6 percent) and Hermagor (-1.9 percent), unemployment decreased, while other districts are affected. Developments are also inconsistent in the various industries. Although fewer unemployed people are listed in the construction and wood sector as well as in auxiliary professions, the technology of 184 open spots and even 145 fewer were offered. In the health sector and under construction, on the other hand, there was an increase in demand for workers, such as Klick-kaernten.at reported.

This mixed balance sheet illustrates the challenges that the labor market in Carinthia has to master, and emphasizes the need for targeted programs to support young people and other affected groups.
