Windsor Royals are optimistic about a better year in 2025

This could be one of those years about Britain's royal family would prefer not to elaborate. Hardly anyone in the Windsor clan could have foreseen the challenges that would arise in the early days of King Charles III 's rule would come to them.

Prince William describes the year as “brutal”

Prince William, heir to the throne, aptly described 2024 as “brutal” and probably “the hardest year of my life.” Britain's royal editor-in-chiefThe Mirror, Russell Myers, describes the past 12 months as amazing. “It has been a simply unprecedented time, both for those individuals struggling with separate health issues and, more broadly, a really challenging time for other members of the family.”

Changes in royal openness

The diagnoses of the king and his daughter-in-law shocked royal watchers, but also heralded a change in how the royals interact with the public. “We've seen a real openness within the royal family that we've never seen before,” noted Lizzie Robinson, a journalist atITV News.

Particularly notable was the king's willingness to discuss his own health. Robinson added: “He wanted to raise awareness and encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get checked.” Following its announcement, there was a significant increase in searches on the NHS website.

Prince William juggles duties and family

Amid the health scares, Prince William temporarily stepped away from his royal duties to support his family. This left the 1,000-year-old institution without three of its most senior members. “Camilla kept the royal show going for many months,” Robinson said, adding that she was supported by other Windsors, including Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

The transformation of Queen Camilla

Myers points out that Queen Camilla “did not expect to be at the center of the institution.” He emphasized: "Camila's change in the last few decades has been remarkable, because not so long ago she was the number one public enemy." Questions about its acceptance by the British public have now been surpassed by its role as a pillar of the institution.

Prince William's public return

Prince William returned to public engagements in April and has since then deftly juggled his work and family responsibilities. He put extra childcare on the back burner while Kate continued to recover and twice represented the king at state occasions in France. The pressure on the heir to the throne was significant, both personally and professionally.

Challenges for the Sussexes

However, the challenges for the Windsors were not limited to Britain. Across the Atlantic, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, made several trips to Nigeria, Canada and Colombia, to promote their charity work and projects such as Invictus and online child protection.

While these trips were not official visits on behalf of the British government, they were nonetheless reminiscent of traditional royal tours, with ceremonial receptions and meetings with high-profile figures.

The coming challenges for the Sussexes

However, the Sussexes also appear to have stalled in their business endeavors. In March, Meghan returned to Instagram after a six-year hiatus to announce a new lifestyle project, American Riviera Orchard. Their latest Netflix offering, which gave a glimpse into the world of professional polo, received mixed reviews.

However, one of the PR experts expressed optimism about the couple: "The next step was to start all these businesses and things," Peter Mancusi, a crisis management expert, told CNN.

Prince Andrew in the spotlight

Back in England, Prince Andrew almost had a quiet 2024 after previous scandals. But that changed when a court hearing revealed his close relationship with a suspected Chinese spy. This incident once again raises questions about his judgment and could be a wake-up call for the Duke.

Looking ahead to 2025 and the royal family's efforts

By the end of the year, King Charles and Queen Camilla had resumed foreign visits and taken a ten-day trip to Australia and Samoa. Robinson commented on the “genuine warmth and appreciation” they received during their ambitious journey.

A palace official informed CNN that the royal's "treatment is moving in a positive direction" and that plans for further trips in 2025 are in the works.
