Vienna property developer competition: Focus on innovation for social housing!

The city of Vienna continues to set standards in social housing. Vice Mayor and Housing Councilor Kathrin Gaál explained that the internationally recognized Vienna housing model offers innovative solutions to the challenges of the future. The property developer competition, an important quality instrument, plays a key role in the continuous development of subsidized housing. To date, approximately 90 competitions have been held since 1995, resulting in the creation of approximately 46,000 housing units for over 100,000 people. This reflects urban development policy, which is closely linked to the needs of residents.

Particularly noteworthy is the international award of the property developer competition with the URBACT Good Practice Label in October 2024. This recognizes the outstanding work carried out as part of a European program to overcome urban challenges in solidarity. This honor shows how flagship projects in Vienna serve as a model for other cities, which was enthusiastically received by the representatives of wohnfonds_wien. “International delegations are interested in the Vienna concept and often visit wohnfonds_wien to learn how we design our subsidized housing,” said the management, Gregor Puscher and Dieter Groschopf.

New competition call for Vienna 20

A new property developer competition, which is taking place in cooperation with ÖBB-Immobilienmanagement GmbH, is bringing a breath of fresh air to the city's construction projects. Around 530 subsidized residential units are being advertised for the Nordwestbahnhof project area in the 20th district. This competition is part of the “Housing Offensive 2024+” and focuses on the development of climate-friendly residential areas that are planned according to circular economy principles. The first phases of the competition are already underway and the participants are required to develop innovative concepts. The final meeting of the assessment committee is scheduled for October 2025, which promises rapid implementation of the plans, as the details on the website of Wohnfonds_Vienna can be found.
