Fatal accident in Gleisdorf: 79-year-old dies in collision!
On New Year's Eve, exactly at 6:00 p.m., a tragic traffic accident occurred on Wechsel Street. A 25-year-old car driver was driving from Gleisdorf towards Pischelsdorf when a 79-year-old from the Weiz district crossed the road at a blind curve. The driver apparently noticed the senior citizen too late, which led to a serious collision. Despite immediate first aid from numerous rescue workers, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. The good news, however, is that an alcohol test on the driver came back negative orf.at reports.
In 2024, a total of 349 people died in traffic accidents in Austria, which corresponds to a decrease of 13.4 percent compared to 2023, when there were 402 traffic deaths. This number is the second highest since records began in 1950, surpassed only by 2020 with 344 deaths. There were 61 traffic deaths in Styria last year, which is also a decrease compared to 81 deaths in 2023. Nevertheless, when comparing federal states, Styria remains in third place for fatal accidents, behind Lower and Upper Austria ots.at.
Focus on causes of accidents
The main cause of fatal traffic accidents remains distraction, responsible for 33.1 percent of cases. Improper driving speeds and priority violations are also among the most common reasons for serious accidents. Alcohol, drugs or medication played a role in 6.9 percent of fatal accidents. The Ministry of the Interior emphasizes that, in addition to increased surveillance, preventive measures and road safety are of utmost importance. The police are therefore planning to increase their presence in accident-prone areas in the new year and to gradually remove speeders and drunk drivers from traffic.
The annual traffic safety statistics emphasize the valuable work of the police and show that the increase in traffic fatalities in the capital Vienna contrasts with the decline in other federal states. This underlines the need for further measures to improve road safety and protect all road users.
