Animal protection in Central Saxony: Fundraising campaign ensures animal welfare!

In the Central Saxony district, five animal protection associations received financial support of 1,500 euros to promote their important work. Dr. Lothar Beier, the district's first alderman, forewent printed Christmas greetings this year and used the saved funds for animal welfare organizations, including the Döbeln and surrounding area animal welfare association, which runs the Ostrau animal shelter. “We are very happy to have many committed animal rights activists and well-run animal shelters and rescue centers in the district,” said Beier happily. The donations are crucial because the Ostrava animal shelter in particular was recently faced with an acute shortage of hay for the animals. Fortunately, a call on social media ensured sufficient supplies.

Focus on animal welfare projects

But the money from Christmas greetings should not be used for infrastructure projects. Mario Becker, board member of the Döbelner Animal Welfare Association, emphasized that the financial resources must be used primarily to cover the increased veterinary costs. “The new fee regulations have driven up prices,” explained Becker. The Leisnig animal shelter is also struggling with higher costs because many sick animals come for treatment. In this context, Wild Bird Care Central Saxony should also be mentioned, which specializes in the rehabilitation of sick birds of prey and also benefits from the donations.

Another inspiring story comes from the Ostrava animal shelter, where the club recently took in two sick ponies. Larger exercise areas had to be created for animals that require special care due to health problems. Thanks to the support of the Hans Peter Dürasch Foundation, the necessary project to create a new paddock was financed, which will provide a better home for the two ponies, Fanny and Mary. The call to support these and other projects shows how important collaboration between local institutions and committed citizens is in order to maintain animal protection and ensure animal care can be read on the animal shelter's website.
