Thuringia: Stasi man becomes environment minister in Voigt's new cabinet!

Thuringia in a state of emergency! The political landscape is shaking after CDU Prime Minister Mario Voigt (48) unveiled his brand new cabinet on Friday morning. What is particularly causing a stir is the groundbreaking appointment of a former member of the GDR state security service. PICTURE reports that for the first time in the history of the Federal Republic, a former Stasi soldier, Tilo Kummer (56), was sworn in as Environment Minister.

Tilo Kummer, a well-known BSW politician and former ex-Left MP, is now responsible not only for environmental issues, but also for the areas of energy, nature conservation and forestry. But his background is causing a stir: without having been a member of the SED, Kummer had close connections and served voluntarily in the notorious Stasi guard regiment “Feliks Dzierzynski”. This historic appointment understandably causes political tensions and heated discussions across the country.

The new power structure in Thuringia

But that's not all: In the shadow of this controversy, the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) fought for three ministries. The important finance ministry is now under the leadership of the former mayor of the Left, Katja Wolf (48), who was also promoted to deputy head of government. Also new in office is the entrepreneur and career changer Steffen Schütz (58, BSW), who is now tasked with driving forward digitalization and infrastructure in Thuringia.

The SPD will receive two key ministries: Georg Maier (57) will retain his post as Interior Minister, while Katharina Schenk (36) will take over the social affairs, health, work and family departments. At the same time, the CDU is showing itself to be strong: with four ministries, it occupies the most positions. Particularly noteworthy is Christian Tischner (43), who as education minister is also responsible for science and culture and achieved a decisive election victory against AfD politician Björn Höcke.

Reactions and outlook

In the south of Thuringia, Beate Meißner (42) takes over the Ministry of Justice, Migration and Consumer Protection, while Stefan Gruhner (40), the former CDU MP, stands out in his new role as head of the State Chancellery. His responsibilities now include the important areas of federal and European affairs, volunteer work, media and sport. The cabinet presentation on Friday morning in the state parliament marked another turning point in the political landscape of Thuringia PICTURE also reported.

The appointment of Tilo Kummer and the distribution of ministries in Thuringia are not only regional but national headlines that amaze political observers and heat up people's minds.
