Shock in book: 17-year-old hit by 2 tons of glass panes in an accident at work!
On October 23, 2025, a serious industrial accident occurred in a commercial business in Buch, Tyrol at around 2:15 p.m. A 17-year-old apprentice was transporting several panes of glass that weighed a total of around 2,000 kg. The transport was carried out using a pallet truck which was secured by a tension belt. However, during a turning maneuver, the pallet truck could no longer be moved for an unknown reason.
A 57-year-old colleague then tried to lift the transport frame with a forklift to solve the problem. The transported goods tipped over and the glass panes fell onto the young worker, who was partially trapped. The person involved in the accident suffered serious injuries.
Rescue measures
The alerted emergency services, including firefighters from Buch, Jenbach and Schwaz, as well as rescue workers, carried out the rescue measures. After initial treatment on site, the seriously injured apprentice was flown to the Innsbruck clinic with the NAH Heli 4 emergency medical helicopter. The young person's colleagues had previously tried in vain to lift the glass panes to help him.

Occupational accidents like this are part of comprehensive statistics that are regularly collected and point to the need for healthy working conditions.
It is essential that companies ensure the safety of their employees and reduce risks to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. The current accident illustrates how important it is to always keep safety in mind when working with heavy loads such as glass panes.
The collection and evaluation of work accidents is carried out within the framework of EU Regulation No. 349/2011 and is updated annually by the umbrella organization of social insurance providers. The following specific measures could help reduce the frequency of workplace accidents:
- Regelmäßige Schulungen für Mitarbeiter im sicheren Umgang mit schweren Lasten.
- Optimierung von Arbeitsabläufen zur Minimierung von Gefahren während des Transports.
- Verbesserte Sicherheitsvorkehrungen bei der Verwendung von Hubwagen und Gabelstaplern.
Overall, the 17-year-old apprentice's accident is a sobering example that represents an important lesson for both those affected and the entire industry. Workplace safety must always be a top priority to avoid such incidents in the future.
