ÖAMTC air rescue breaks record: over 22,000 missions in 2024!
Air rescue in Styria set a remarkable record in 2024. According to the ÖAMTC, the Christophorus 12, Christophorus 14, Christophorus 17 and Christophorus 99 emergency medical helicopters were alerted a total of 3,856 times, an increase compared to 2023 with 3,684 missions. This illustrates the important role of the ÖAMTC air rescue in emergency medical care. What is particularly noteworthy is that the crews take off on an average of ten missions every day, which underlines the urgency and value of their work.
Missions and challenges
The helicopters were called out in around 670 cases for work accidents, school accidents or domestic emergencies, while around 270 missions took place in the event of traffic accidents. Over 150 rescues took place from difficult terrain. The need for rapid intervention becomes clear here, because every moment counts when it comes to saving lives steiermark.ORF.at reported.
The excellent cooperation between the emergency services should also be emphasized, as the managing director of the ÖAMTC air rescue, Marco Trefanitz, emphasizes: “Saving lives was and is teamwork!” This not only successfully established the use of Christophorus 99 to provide relief during particularly busy periods, but also implemented new technical procedures to improve safety during operations under difficult conditions.
Another notable detail is the increase in the total number of rescue flights in Austria: 22,203 missions were carried out in 2024, which corresponds to an average of 61 flights per day, compared to 20,823 in 2023. This number marks a significant progress in the effort to provide effective medical assistance and shows the continued need for such services, especially during disasters such as the flood events in autumn 2024. This development is the common focus of all rescue partners in the future to ensure high-quality and rapid medical care, such as meinkreis.at emphasized.
