Crisis meeting after termination: Who is the head of the festival?

The current conflict surrounding the termination of Marina Davydova, who was originally fired from the festival with immediate effect due to alleged breaches of her contractual obligations, is causing a great stir. How vienna.at reports, Davydova emphasizes that her work at the Berlin Theater Festival did not require approval. Her lawyer explains that although she was part of the artistic committee, it was free of charge and without breach of her duties. At the same time, the festival has declared that her artistic achievements are secured for the coming seasons and that she would be thanked for her work.

The situation has sparked a storm of outrage, not only from Davydova, but also among other artists who have sought to highlight artistic director Markus Hinterhäuser's leadership problems. Director Michael Sturminger criticized the sudden cancellation of his planned production “Everyman” and noted that there was a lack of clear communication. Other voices, such as that of the former director of the Stefan Zweig Center in Salzburg, Klemens Renoldner, expressed concerns about mismanagement in the artist management salzburg.ORF.at reported.

Crisis meeting at political level

In view of the increasing criticism, an emergency meeting was called on Thursday afternoon, which was attended by State Governor Wilfried Haslauer. The festival's board of trustees met to discuss the issues, although the outcome of that meeting remains unknown. These developments remain highly relevant not only for the artists and the festival, but also for the institutions that support them.
