Carinthia's culture on the move: New projects and strategies in focus!
Significant cultural developments are expected in Carinthia in the coming years. The constituent meeting of the Carinthian Cultural Committee took place on September 26, 2023, at which Angelika Hödl was elected as the new chairwoman and Alinazeichen as her deputy. For the first time in the history of the committee, there are two women at the top, which Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) noted with joy. Kaiser emphasized the importance of voluntary work within the committee, which consists of a total of 32 members and the same number of substitute members.
Cultural priorities and initiatives
A central point for the future is the development of a new cultural strategy. The tender process for this is already underway and plans are to start developing it at the beginning of 2024. As part of this strategy, workshops are planned in all districts to discuss important aspects of cultural development. “We definitely want to maintain the implementation of cultural focus years initiated by the members of the cultural committee,” emphasized Kaiser. After the focus on folk culture this year, photography will be the focus in 2024, followed by a year on remembrance culture in 2025.
The initiatives in Carinthia also include a financial increase in cultural prices from around 66,300 euros to 91,000 euros. This upgrade shows the state government's efforts to promote the importance of culture and bring more federal funding to Carinthia. Furthermore, 15 funded projects and numerous educational offers for students and adults will be launched that deal with the dark history of National Socialism, such as Kärnten.ORF.at reported. Nadja Danglmaier from the Carinthian Cultural Committee emphasized that the content of these initiatives is offered in two languages in order to include the entire federal state. “It was also important to us that the program for the Year of Remembrance did not become too centrally focused in Klagenfurt and Villach,” she added.
The developments in the Carinthian cultural sector are not only important for local culture, but also set an example in difficult times. Governor Kaiser emphasized the priority of learning from the past in order to counter rising extremism. These cultural measures aim to strengthen democracy and social values through art and education, such as ktn.gv.at reported.
