Big Health Action Day in Vienna: Intestinal health in focus!

On May 26, 2025, the Chamber of Physicians in Vienna is hosting a special “Health Action Day” that focuses on awareness of intestinal health. This campaign is supported by the Federal Minister of Health, Korinna Schumann, and the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig. The aim of the day of action is to educate the population about the importance of colon cancer prevention and to offer general health tests.

As part of this initiative day, a “prevention tent” will be set up that will provide various rapid tests, including blood sugar and blood pressure tests. Free advice from doctors is offered on site in order to actively support the population. A special highlight is a 22-meter-long walk-in intestinal model that clearly conveys the importance of intestinal health. In addition, a car from the medical radio service 141 will be available and employees from “Med4School – The Health Hub” will provide information about their work.

Colon cancer: a serious disease

Every year, around 54,000 people in Germany develop colon cancer, with younger people increasingly being affected. Colon cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms, which makes early detection even more important. Regular check-ups are the best protection against this disease. The Chamber of Doctors would like to use the day of action to raise awareness among the population and encourage them to take advantage of the appropriate preventative measures.

From the age of 50, it is recommended that men and women find out about the various options for early detection of colon cancer. This includes both colonoscopy and the stool test (iFOBT), which plays an important role in early detection. The stool test is particularly practical because it can be carried out conveniently at home.

Prevention options and new regulations

People between the ages of 50 and 54 are entitled to an annual stool test, which checks for non-visible blood in the stool. If the findings are normal, colonoscopies only need to be repeated after ten years. From April 2025, the early detection of colon cancer will be regulated uniformly, so that both men and women aged 50 and over can use the same screening offers. From this date, women and men can have a stool test every two years and have a colonoscopy up to twice every ten years.

The Chamber of Physicians in Vienna cordially invites everyone interested to take part in the “Health Action Day”. The media event will take place on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Hof, 1010 Vienna. For better planning, pre-registration is possible at pressestelle@aekwien.at necessary.

Information and awareness on these topics is of utmost importance in order to increase the chances of a cure for colorectal cancer through early detection. The initiative in Vienna could be a decisive step towards better health education and prevention.
