Friedrichshafen buys speed cameras: control without staff?
At its most recent city council meeting, the city of Friedrichshafen purchased a state-of-the-art speed camera trailer for 230,000 euros, but decided to only use it sporadically. This could result in significantly fewer fines, which in turn would ease the burden on the administration schwaebische.de reported. Despite the positive prospects of semi-stationary speed camera technology, the committee rejected the creation of an additional half-day position that would have been necessary to process fines. The use of the speed camera could thus be limited to time-limited operations, e.g. at night or on weekends in dangerous locations or popular “poser” routes.
Less staff, fewer tickets
The decision not to create an additional position was met with mixed reactions. Mayor Dieter Stauber presented an alternative proposal that would only use the speed camera on an hourly basis and not on a regular basis. This potentially means fewer fines, which in turn could reduce work in the legal office. However, leading council members from the Greens and SPD/Die Linke expressed concerns and called for additional human resources to use the new technology efficiently. Ultimately, however, a majority of the council rejected the request to create new positions, while other members expressed hope that the new speed camera would be used responsibly.
Digitalization in council operations
In parallel to these developments, many municipalities are becoming increasingly digitally positioned. The city provides its council members with tablet PCs to be used for administrative matters. The purchase is made by the municipality, and the devices can also be used privately, which makes digital work in the council safer and more efficient kommunalbrevier.de reported. This measure aims to reduce the effort required for system administration while ensuring tax breaks for the use of these devices, further increasing the attractiveness of responsible digital council work.
