Radenthein fire department saves mule from impending abyss!
On Friday, March 28, 2025, the Kaning volunteer fire department was called to an operation in the municipality of Radenthein. A transport vehicle, also known as a mule, was in danger of crashing, which led to the fire department taking quicker action. The technical defect was the cause of this dangerous situation, which was immediately addressed with the deployment of 16 comrades. Click Carinthia reports on the successful securing of the vehicle, which was stabilized with a grab pull and ground anchoring.
The firefighters also provided support in changing the defective tire. Lifting cushions were used to make the process easier. After the work was done, the vehicle could finally be towed to safe terrain, which should ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Important role of the fire department in technical assistance
Technical assistance is a central area of responsibility for fire departments. These operations not only include fires, but also protection and support in the event of technical breakdowns, such as the one that occurred in Radenthein last Friday. According to annual statistics, the number of deployments in the area of technical assistance has increased by more than 30 percent nationwide. This reflects the challenges firefighters face, particularly in years with extreme weather conditions. The Ministry of the Interior of Baden-Württemberg documented a total of 128,302 fire brigade operations in 2021, of which 51.4 percent were technical assistance.
In the Stuttgart and Freiburg regions in particular, stakes rose by 16 and 20 percent respectively. These figures illustrate the growing need to support volunteer firefighters and focus on their training. In 2021, more than 111,000 firefighters worked on a voluntary basis, with the number of active female firefighters being 7,721.
Outlook on future challenges
The challenges facing fire departments are not expected to diminish. The increasing number of deployments for technical assistance and the increasing number of extreme weather situations require constant adjustment of resources and training content. The aim is to further optimize the social and infrastructural conditions in order to strengthen the performance of the volunteer fire department and thus also increase the safety of citizens. The Wiehl fire department emphasizes in its documents how important good training and preparation for technical assistance are in order to be able to act quickly and efficiently in crisis situations.
