Fellner takes over SPÖ leadership: mistakes admitted, new paths demanded!

In an interview with the APA, the new Carinthian SPÖ leader Fellner commented on the clear results of the recent party conference, which apparently overwhelmed him. After intensive interviews, he appeared hoarse and emphasized the importance of taking the concerns and fears of the population seriously. At the same time, Fellner acknowledged criticism of the SPÖ's previous communication, especially regarding asylum policy. He explained that the SPÖ has made mistakes in the past and that it is time to correct them in order to be perceived as the party of labor. He sees that many workers are now voting for the FPÖ. He would like to counteract this situation by encouraging party officials to listen more and seek dialogue with citizens.

Fellner announced the first personnel decisions: Gabriele Schaunig and Günther Albel will be his deputies, while Philipp Glanzer will act as the new government coordinator. Fellner also announced the exchange with the coalition partner ÖVP, but without revealing specific details about taking over the office of state governor from Peter Kaiser. With regard to cooperation, he praised the currently well-functioning red-black coalition.

demands on the federal government

In solidarity with the ÖVP, the Carinthian state parties are making demands on the future federal government after the deadly terrorist attack in Villach. SPÖ and ÖVP jointly present packages of demands in a special session of the Carinthian state parliament, which primarily deal with security and asylum policy. The SPÖ is calling for, among other things, an upper limit on asylum and the consistent deportation of those who pose a risk. The examination of asylum seekers with regard to security aspects and the establishment of integration years are also part of the SPÖ's concerns.

  • Die SPÖ fordert folgende Maßnahmen:
    • Asyl-Obergrenze
    • Wartefrist auf Sozialleistungen für Asylberechtigte
    • Mehr Personal für Polizei und Staatsschutz
    • Background-Checks bei Asylverfahren
    • Asylverfahrenszentren an EU-Außengrenzen
    • Verpflichtendes Integrationsjahr

The ÖVP, on the other hand, is calling for, among other things, an ongoing review of asylum seekers and a stop to admission for certain countries of origin. The timing of the demands is being discussed by the FPÖ due to the attack in Villach, with criticism being expressed about the timing of the move.

Austria's role in European security

These developments and the emphasized importance of cooperation at European level are in the context of the needs arising from the tense security situation. Austria plans to submit the measures to the EU Commission by the middle of the year and supports the creation of a Union system for returns. This is intended to reduce bureaucratic hurdles when it comes to returns. In addition, Karner praises the EU preventive measures to combat crime and goes on to say that Austria is taking a clear stance on the new regulation of long-term residence permits.

The new SPÖ leader Fellner is aware of the challenges and would like to promote the mobility and support of the Carinthian SPÖ through targeted measures in order to actively address the concerns of citizens.
