On the third Sunday of Advent, December 16, 2024, the audience experienced a top-class musical festival in the auditorium of the Kurfürst-Maximilian-Gymnasium in Burghausen! Under the direction of the talented conductor André Gold, J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio presented in an abridged version. This captivating performance focused primarily on Cantatas I, V and VI, highlighting many often overlooked aspects of the work. Gold spanned an impressive range from the first cantata “How should I receive you” to the majestic final chorus, accompanied by the serious melody “O Haupt full of blood and wounds”. This performance portrayed the child in the manger as a great lord and a strong king, which greatly moved the audience.

A musical delight

The ensemble was top-class: the concert choir Cantus aurumque impressed with precise phrasing and clear sound, supported by the excellent musicians of the Salzburg Baroque Orchestra, which used instruments in their original sound. The soloists, especially Bernhard Bechtold as Evangelist and Tobias Lusser as Herod, showed an outstanding performance, with Maria Helgath in particular shining despite short-term preparation. The applause was bombastic - the audience rose to their feet to appreciate the brilliant performance. André Gold expressed his gratitude and emphasized the importance of time: “Giving time is far more precious than anything that money can buy – because it comes from the heart and touches the heart,” which underlined the emotional character of the evening, reports the Passauer Neue Presse.
