Fact check: Trump's speech to Congress

president Donald Trump made numerous false and misleading statements in his speech to Congress on Tuesday. These covered a wide range of topics including the economy, climate, immigration and more.

Examining Trump's Statements on Government Efficiency

Trump claimed that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative led by Elon Musk, uncovered “hundreds of billions of dollars” in fraud. However, this number is unsubstantiated and requires context.

On the date of Trump's speech, DOGE gave up his website said his work saved an estimated $105 billion for taxpayers. However, evidence to support this high figure is lacking. DOGE listed about 2,300 contracts that it claimed to have terminated, which is said to result in a total savings of about $8.9 billion. Nearly 3,500 upcoming grants were also identified, but without specific documentation for those savings.

False statements about the economy

Regarding the economy, Trump mentioned that the US would generate “trillions and trillions of dollars” through tariffs on imports. It's important to note that tariffs are paid by U.S. importers, not foreign exporters, meaning the costs can ultimately be passed on to U.S. consumers.

Trump also claimed that “small business optimism” has reached a record 41 points. This can be interpreted as a reference to the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index, which actually recorded an increase of 41 points, but only in one specific parameter, namely small business owners' expectations about the economic situation.

Misinformation about the climate

Trump also spoke of supposedly ending the “Green New Scam.” This statement is misleading because the original initiative he is referring to was never enacted into law. Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022, included sweeping measures to support $430 billion in climate and energy projects.

Given these facts, Trump and other Republican lawmakers are showing efforts to reject parts of this law, but this may still be challenging. The legislation is estimated to have saved the government $240 billion.

Immigration and Border Control Report

Trump claimed that he had reached the lowest number of illegal border crossings “ever.” However, that is not correct. Statistics show that there were months in the 1960s when the number of border guard encounters with migrants was even lower.

Claims about Joe Biden and his improvement of the justice system

Trump was also criticized for claiming that Biden had “maliciously” persecuted him. The charges mentioned by Trump were filed by a special counsel, meaning that the connection to Biden, who appointed him, does not necessarily constitute an attribution of guilt.

The “worst inflation in 48 years” claimed by Trump can also be considered questionable. In fact, the inflation rate in the US reached 9.1% in June 2022, which, although high, did not reach the figures mentioned by Trump.

Trump's statements include a lot of inaccurate and misleading information that doesn't stand up to scrutiny. It is crucial to distinguish fact from fiction, especially in political discussions and debates.
