Krems celebrates: First certified prostate cancer center in Lower Austria!
The University Hospital Krems has reached a significant milestone and is now the first certified prostate cancer center in Lower Austria. This certification, granted by OnkoZert, the German Cancer Society Institute, makes Krems one of only four certified prostate cancer centers in all of Austria. A comprehensive audit, successfully completed in October 2024, ensured that the strict criteria were met.
The aim of the certification is to ensure a high level of treatment for prostate cancer. The Krems Center brings together medical services from various disciplines, including urology, oncology and radiation therapy. In addition, additional services such as palliative medicine, dietetics, psycho-oncology, social services and physiotherapy are offered, which enables holistic care from diagnosis to aftercare.
Interdisciplinary approaches to patient care
The center director Bernhard Grubmüller is pleased about the successful certification and emphasizes that the structured treatment process benefits the patients. During the course of the certification, both practicing physicians and patients were surveyed, which led to significant improvements in the treatment organization. The team in Krems has worked for over four years to meet the certification requirements and is now receiving special recognition for its commitment to research.
As part of the certification, various treatment criteria and the organization of clinical processes were evaluated. The quality of medical care was supported by collecting key figures. These measures are part of a system that improves patient care in interdisciplinary structures. Preparation for the audit is extensive, as prostate cancer centers must submit a detailed data sheet documenting compliance with requirements, including care monitoring and annual surveillance audits to continue to ensure the quality of treatment.
Strategic developments at the Krems Clinic
The new certification is part of the strategic developments of the Krems University Hospital, which was certified as a lung cancer center in 2022. These successes were recognized in a joint celebration, which underlines the importance of the specialized centers. The expansion of the specialized centers will continue to be pursued in the future in order to meet the needs of patients.
The certification for prostate cancer centers followed OnkoZert's strict specifications and is based on a comprehensive survey questionnaire that contains all relevant information for quality control. Interdisciplinary approaches to treatment and close cooperation between all those involved are crucial to the success of such centers.
