Drama in the Mediterranean: Five dead and dozens missing after boat accident!

Gavdos, Griechenland - A tragedy shakes the Mediterranean! Five lives have been lost, and hope for dozens of missing migrants fades after a boat has dropped in front of the Greek island of Gavdos. The Greek coast guard immediately started a large -scale search, supported by an Italian warship and several helicopters. The night brought not only darkness, but also the horror of the ship's accident.

The dramatic events occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday when the crowded migrant boat capped. While the coast guard was able to save 39 people, 40 more are missing. The fates of these people are uncertain and the search for them is in full swing. The coast guard is in use with ships and aircraft to find the missing migrants.

rescue actions in full swing

In another dramatic turn of the fate, a cargo ship driving under Maltese flag saved 47 migrants, which were about 40 nautical miles from Gavdos in distress. A tanker could even bring 88 other people to safety, who waited 28 nautical miles to help on the island. These rescue actions once again show the desperate location of the people who embark on this dangerous journey.

The first information indicates that the boats broke out together from Libya. This route is notorious for its dangers, and the number of shipping gap has increased alarming in the past few months. The isolated location of Gavdos and Crete makes the situation even more precarious.

a worrying increase

The situation is not new. In 2015-2016, Greece received almost a million migrants from the Middle East, Africa and Asia, many of them via dangerous sea routes in inflatable boats. According to the Ministry of Migration, the number of people who come to Greece this year has increased by 25 percent. The increase in Rhodes and in the southeastern Aegean, where people flee from war and poverty, is particularly strong

The last few weeks have been shaped by other tragic incidents. At the end of November, eight people, including six minors, north of the island of Samos, died on a route that is often used by human smugglers. According to the United Nations, 1,536 people have already died in the central Mediterranean this year or are missing. The International Organization for Migration reports that more than 30,309 refugees in the Mediterranean have lost their lives in the past ten years, including over 3,000 last year.
