Ecumenical Forest Christmas in Alzenau: A light that touches hearts!

On December 24, 2024, a very special event will take place on the scout grounds in Alzenau: the Ecumenical Forest Christmas. This atmospheric celebration, which begins at 4 p.m. and lasts until 5:30 p.m., was initiated by a dedicated team of volunteers consisting of both Protestant and Catholic community representatives. Walter Lang, a family pastor from Alzenau, says that the idea came about in the context of the pandemic, when the original plans to hold a service in the stadium could not be realized due to new requirements. This alternative outdoor celebration has been available since 2021 and is very popular.

The last few years have already been a great success, and this year the organizers are expecting a similar number of participants as last year, when over 250 people found their way to the forest Christmas. “The atmosphere is very atmospheric and a bit romantic,” enthuses Lang. The highlights of the event include the musical accompaniment by the volunteers and the presence of shepherd Matthias Deller, who enriches the experience with his animals. Already at the light reception and during the service, participants are given the opportunity to feel a special connection to the Christmas message and to their fellow human beings, just as it might have been at the nativity scene in Bethlehem.

Community cohesion

Parallel to the forest Christmas, the Protestant communities in the Kahlgrund region joined forces. In order to organize the vacant position in the Alzenau parish, all full-time employees in the region are working more closely together alzenau-evangelisch.de reported. Particular mention is made of the farewell of Pastor Eva Güther-Fontaine, who has worked in Alzenau since 2017. The cooperation between the three parishes of Alzenau, Kahl-Karlstein and Schöllkrippen has strengthened the ability to maintain the pastoral care offer for the parishioners even during this transitional period.

The innovative team and the combined effort of the communities underline the festive atmosphere that surrounds the Ecumenical Forest Christmas. It is with joy that the participants not only take a light home with them, but also experience the community and the contemplative time during Advent.
