Rapid Vienna continues to fall: Stöger fights against the misery!

After Rapid Vienna's 2-0 home defeat against LASK, coach Peter Stöger commented on his team's current situation. The loss was not only the third defeat in a row for Rapid, but also the first home defeat against LASK since August 2019. This defeat was watched by 23,300 spectators in the stadium, who reacted to their team's performance with a mixture of frustration and disappointment. “We now have some construction sites again,” said Stöger, who provided a dissatisfied analysis of his players’ emotional performance. The scoring chances were allowed “totally easy and cheap,” which led to significant problems on defense.

LASK, under new coach Dietmar Kühbauer, acted more confidently that day and took the three points from Vienna-Hütteldorf, which moved them up to ninth place in the Bundesliga. The goals for Linz were scored by Usor in the 12th minute and Adeniran in the 42nd minute. Despite having more possession, Rapid remained ineffective on offense. A bright spot for the hosts was the penalty in stoppage time, which Mbuyi failed to score because of the good LASK goalkeeper Jungwirth.

Stöger analyzes the problems

Stöger emphasized that the first games of the season in which Rapid were successful were only won with narrow results. “There is a lot to do,” warned the coach and asked his players to show the virtues that characterize Rapid Vienna. “Some players are in a celebratory mood after the first successful rounds,” criticized Stöger and demanded consistent performance from his team. In the current game he made three changes, but would have preferred to replace five players to give new impetus, which was only partially successful.

Rapid Vienna's current situation is in the context of a general challenge in football, where coaching changes often happen hastily. In other top leagues, including Germany, it is not uncommon for a direct successor to be hired for dismissed coaches despite short-term instability. Interim trainers from our own ranks often take over to ensure a smooth transition. Meanwhile, the discussion about the possible introduction of fixed changing times for coaches continues, as these measures could potentially help to protect coaches in worse periods.

Next weekend, Rapid Vienna will have to do everything they can to recover from this heavy defeat and get back to their old strengths. The next challenge will be crucial to bring the season to a positive conclusion.
