Russia and Iran demand immediate stopping the fights in Syria!

A dramatic meeting of the powers! The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pronounced an urgent warning at the Doha Forum in Qatar on Saturday: Russia, Iran and Turkey are calling for an immediate end of the fights in Syria! The situation comes to a head, while the opposition fighter under the banner of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) at a breathtaking speed and conquer key cities like Aleppo and Hama.

"We call up for an immediate end of enemy activities!", Lavrov announced. Together with his Iranian and Turkish colleagues, Abbas Araghchi and Hakan Fidan, he emphasized the need for a dialogue between the Syrian government and the legitimate opposition. The three countries have been active in the so-called Astana talks since 2017, which are looking for a political solution to the conflict in Syria.

The urgency of the dialogue

The Resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council, which emphasizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, is the focus of the discussions. Lavrov said: "We want this resolution to be implemented completely." But the reality on site is alarming: the rebels have taken control of large parts of the country and are now at the gates of Homs, a strategically important city that connects the capital Damascus with the coastal regions.

"We see a Syrian government that is much weaker than in 2016," reported a correspondent from Kilis, near the Turkish border. "The Russians are busy with the Ukraine conflict and have deducted most of their military resources from Syria." This shift in power has created a dangerous vacuum that the rebels exploit.

a desperate attempt to keep control

"We do everything we can to prevent terrorists like HTS for geopolitical purposes," said Lavrov, trying to dispel the fears that President Bashar al-Assad's regime is about to collapse. However, experts warn that Moscow was surprised by the quick progress of the rebels and has no clear plan to keep al-Assad in power.

"The opposition has made significant progress in Deraa and Sweida, in the southwest of Syria, as well as in the vicinity of Damascus," added Lavrov. The situation remains tense while the world looks at the next steps of this geopolitical chess. Will the alliance between Russia, Iran and Turkey be enough to prevent the turn in this bloody conflict? Time will show it!
