Family tragedy in Syria: Nine dead by Turkish air raid!
Kobane, Syrien - A fatal Turkish air raid shook the region in northern Syria last Sunday evening: nine members of a farmer family, including mostly children, were killed near Kobane, while two other relatives were injured. According to Syria's democratic forces (SDF), it was a targeted attack on the family, which was in an area that was controlled by the Kurds. This region, rich in oil reserves, has achieved extensive autonomy since the civil war in 2011. The Turkish government sees an expansion of the prohibited workers' party in Kurdistan (PKK) in the Kurdish YPG units that are active in this area and regularly carries out military operations against them. This happens against the background of a conflict that continues to worsen after the Islamist government in Damascus and the SDF recently made an agreement on the integration of a Kurdish autonomy management into the national government, such as overton-magazin.de reported.
In the following time, an important “conference of the national dialogue” took place in Damascus, from which a new political perspective for Syria is to emerge. Under the new temporary president Ahmed al-Sharaa, around 500 participants gathered on February 24 and 25, 2025, including representatives of civil society and the former government. The conference should offer a basis for future state structure and was considered a significant step for the agreement within Syria. However, the Kurdish self -government, which is about 10% of the population, remained excluded from the conversations, which led to considerable criticism of the transitional government procedure. Many felt marginalized because decisive ethnic groups, including the Kurds, were not heard, such as krone.at
The violent clashes and the ongoing dialogue with a possible political reorganization intensify the complexity of the situation in Syria. The unclear fate of foreign troops, including the American and Turkish soldiers, as well as the role of the various militias involved and their future integration into the regular armed forces are central issues that have to be solved for the desired stability in the country. Al-Schaharaa unequivocally emphasized that the unity of Syria remained preserved and that all armed groups had to be banned outside of the official institutions. Time is urgent, because the path to a new Syria requires consensus and a serious dialogue between all ethnic groups for the successful implementation of the plans that the national dialogue has initiated.
