Bloody attacks in Congo: Humanitarian aid workers under fire!
The situation in eastern Congo has escalated dramatically after three employees of the Swiss aid organization Heks died in a violent attack on Wednesday. The victims, all local staff, were killed during a humanitarian operation in the embattled North Kivu region. This incident happened in an area that has been marked by fighting between rebels and the Congolese army for years. According to Heks, project work in this region will be suspended until further notice as the exact circumstances of the attack are still being investigated. The incident represents a serious violation of international humanitarian law, the aid agency stated. This tragedy comes at a time when conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to escalate.
Rebel group M23 is rearming
Parallel to this crisis, the M23 rebel militia, blamed for violence in the region, recently held a public meeting in the captured city of Goma. The political leader of the M23, Corneille Nangaa, announced that he would “drive” Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi out of office. The M23 is reported to have captured strategic points in the town of Nyabibwe, just 130 kilometers from Goma, and is targeting other towns. Despite the rebel group's proclaimed ceasefire, fighting continued unhindered in the neighboring province of South Kivu, which could further worsen the humanitarian situation. In the city of Goma, the M23 has already installed its own mayors and is trying to establish a new order.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also urgently called for a ceasefire in eastern Congo. In a powerful message, he called for silencing the guns and respecting the sovereignty of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He warned: “There is no military solution.” It remains to be seen whether the UN Human Rights Council will respond to the incidents and order a formal investigation to hold those responsible to account. These developments highlight the precarious situation in the country and the urgent need for international attention and support as violence continues to rage unabated.
