Jonathan Milan celebrates his first Tour victory in the mass sprint!
The eighth stage of the Tour de France took place on Saturday, July 12, 2025. The route ran over 171.4 kilometers from Saint-Méen-le-Grand to Laval. Despite the lack of racing action in the previous kilometers, which indicated a pre-programmed mass sprint, a few breakaways caused excitement. A duo from Team Total-Energies tried to break away from the field, but was soon caught up again. In the decisive sprint, Jonathan Milan from Lidl-Trek was able to win, which also marked his first success on the tour.
With this victory, Jonathan Milan, 24 years old, also took the lead in the sprint classification and thus captured the green jersey. Tadej Pogačar, the Tour's defending champion, retains the yellow jersey as the overall leader after winning the previous seventh stage and is now 54 seconds clear of Remco Evenepoel. Kevin Vauquelin is currently in third place, followed by Jonas Vingegaard. Felix Gall from East Tyrol is in 14th place, almost five minutes behind.
Stage details and results
Pogačar said after the race that the day was relatively relaxed and that he was already preparing for the next, more brutal stage on Monday. There were also some incidents among the drivers. Joao Almeida, Pogačar's teammate, had a crash but was still able to finish the stage. Remco Evenepoel reached a top speed of over 82 km/h and stayed in the leading group. Two French riders, Mathieu Burgaudeau and Matteo Vercher, tried to attack with 70 kilometers to go, but were caught again just before the finish line. They received the award of the same name for their fighting spirit.
