Dispute over office ship: Danube becomes the scene of heated debates!

The debate about viadonau's planned office ship at the passenger port in Vienna is causing considerable tension. Since 2019, viadonau has been working on the realization of a new location directly on the Danube, but a crucial part of the plan could endanger the berths for cruise ships. The Wien Holding subsidiary, Donauraum Wien, already sees restrictions in the operations of the passenger port in the current plans. The complex division of land on the right bank of the Danube, where various areas belong to the federal government and the city of Vienna, is already becoming a stumbling block in discussions. Despite the magistrate's approval for the office ship, Donauraum Wien raises an objection and clears the way for a legal dispute before the Federal Administrative Court, as wien.ORF.at reported.

Dispute over location and synergies

The office ship's controversial position between twelve piers could soon lead to traffic chaos in the water. viadonau believes that the ship's optimal location near the Millennium City could create a synergy that not only improves the operations of viadonau, but also those of the Supreme Shipping Authority and the police. In a planning competition in 2020, the project by the planning community Pittino & Ortner Architekturbüro ZT-Gesellschaft m.b.H. and other partners selected. These differing views increase the complexity of the process, which is why City Councilor for Finance Peter Hanke (SPÖ) is now interested in initiating discussions about a possible purchase of land by the City of Vienna. These measures would aim to further develop the waterfront and thus find a solution to the existing conflicts, such as vienna.at reported.

With the ongoing legal dispute and the associated ambiguities, it remains to be seen what the situation is with the planned development and use of the passenger port. The questions surrounding operational restrictions and possible harmonization of processes are currently at the top of the agenda of decision-makers in Vienna.
